OUR STORY

About Us
Welcome! I’m Joyce Lanier, and together with my husband Laval, we run ERS Catering—a made-to-order, home-based bakery in Mebane, NC. For over 30 years, we’ve been serving gourmet baked goods that bring back the warmth of Sunday dinners. Our kitchen is inspected and approved by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, and our signature Sunday Dinner Cakes—like German Chocolate, Red Velvet, Coconut, and Pineapple-Banana—offer a slice of nostalgia in every bite.
How It All Began
My baking journey started at age 15 with a lopsided, under-frosted cake made from ingredients borrowed from my Aunt Vergie’s pantry. My brother Carl was the first brave soul to taste it. He said it didn’t look good—but it tasted good. That simple encouragement turned my embarrassment into inspiration. By age 19, I was hired to bake my first wedding cake, and ERS Catering was born.
What ERS Means
ERS stands for more than just Edible Recipe Secrets. Growing up, my cousin Charles—who was more like an uncle—used to remind me of my worth by saying, “You’re an ERS,” referencing the last three letters of our family name, McCullers. His words built my confidence and stayed with me. When it came time to name my business, ERS was the only choice. It’s not just a name—it’s a legacy.

Family, Faith & Flavor
When I married Laval, I became a Lanier, but I’m still an ERS at heart. I even baked our wedding cake! Our two children (17.5 years apart—pray for us!) have been my taste testers and motivation for building a home-based business. My sister Paula and brother Howard are my biggest cheerleaders, always celebrating my Raspberry Chocolate and Red Velvet creations with joyful exaggeration.
Above all, I am who I am by the grace of GOD. He is the Giver of wisdom, strength, humility, and eternal life through my LORD and SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST. I honor Him in every recipe and every customer interaction.
